Having had this post as a draft since last May, it’s finally come to fruition since I am blasting Xmal Deutschland in preparation for my favorite monthly darkwave dance party aptly titled “No Soul.” Ixmal doytschland has been described as the “German Siouxsie and the Banshees,” I can somewhat concur for people unfamiliar with the initially all-girl group. Watching Anja sing brings feelings of awe only Dalida can summon (and fine, Siouxsie too).

Though people familiar with Xmal may know them as a primarily “Gothic Rock” group, they started out in the NDW scene with two of my favorite releases on the German avantgarde, punk and new wave label Zickzack. Zickzack was something like Germany’s Rough Trade of the 80s, started by Alfred Hilsberg, the man who coined the term Neue Deutsche Welle. Nearly all of my favorite German records of that era were on Zickzack, what I would do to get my hands on the whole discography! Anyway, Xmal Deutschland released singles Schwarze Welt in 1981 and Incubus Succubus (I not II) in 1982 on Zickzack before taking on an entirely Gothic sound.

I am including “Blut ist Liebe” (Blood is Lust) B-side of the Incubus Succubus 7″ and  first single “Schwarze Welt.” Also included in this post is my favorite dance track from their first album Fetisch, “Qual” which the boys always play to try to get this dance machine started. I feel that I should mention “Blut ist Liebe” being my current phone ringer, la la la.

So yesterday I found a YouTube clip of this amazing song, and instantly became obsessed. You see I had tons of tracks from this supreme traditional West African singer from Guinea, but none compare to this magical song. I tried hard last night to find this track with no luck. Thankfully one of my readers from the Netherlands sent it to me, without my asking. Thanks Dirk for making my day!

This is the best biography I found for Kouyaté Sory Kandia (not to be confused with the other Kouyaté Sorys out there or even lady singer Kandia Kouyaté):

Kouyaté Sory Kandia, another member of the famous Kouyate family, was one of the most beloved singers of Western Africa. Like many others, he tried his voice both on more traditional styles, accompanied by his own ngoni, Djéli Sory Kouyaté’s bala and Sidiki Diabaté’s kora, as well as on something more modern-sounding, accompanied by Kélétigui Traoré’s keyboards and saxophone. In 1977, the whole of Western Africa mourned for his death.

That voice, so grande! I mean listen to him, what a voice! I want to listen to this song forever. I wish I could write more about this remarkable chanter but with all of the Kouyates out there and different variations of his name it gets very confusing. In any case, enjoy this track, it’s lengthy and dreamy. I am also including the more upbeat, vaguely psychedelic “Ahissa” by another Kouyate Sory, Guinean guitarist that I found myself obsessed with last summer (and failed to make more than a blog draft). Watched Nite Jewel perform quite a few times in the past two weeks, thanks to my friend Catherine. Ramona and company did a stellar job, especially during their Death By Audio set on Valentine’s Day. What blew me away, once more, was her impassioned cover of Suicide‘s “Shadazz,” finding myself transfixed, with eyes closed in reverie.

This surreal cover is EXCELLENT live, perhaps transcending the original fast-paced ditty from Suicide’s self-titled second album.

I went through some trouble to cut this mp3 from one of the live performances, as this is not officially recorded (Nite Jewel I love you, the world needs this).  I’ve also included the original version of Shadazz from 1980.

Just wanted to do a quick posting of this 1981 track by Honey Bane, as I wrote extensively about her here, with the inclusion of her Crass Records track “Girl On The Run.”

A total departure from her anarcho-punk sound of prior releases on Crass Records and with Fatal Microbes, “Turn me On Turn Me Off” was her second single release from her [failed] five year contract with EMI. It is also included in my “March 17th” mix from 2007.

My friend Jamie, master word weaver, wrote a blog entry praising Farced. It totally made my day, and perhaps I won’t be pulling the plug on my nearly 3.5 year old baby.

My friend Sybil has better taste in music than anyone I know. Each time she updates her blog it’s like I’m getting a fucking present. And when she updates with a mix, it’s like my birthday, Halloween and Passover all rolled into one vaguely terrifying event. It’s a good thing I’ve got this nice new synth-laden mix to experience it to. Long live Farced.

This coupled with the emails I have received with high praise requesting that I do not forfeit updating have made me change my mind about pulling the plug on dear old Farced. After months of not updating (and paying for my own webhosting) I figured no one would care if I did. Thank you friends and strangers for showing that is not the case. The most amazing was a reader signing up for twitter just to ask me not to stop updating.

Maybe now that I’ve started updating again, The Hype Machine will reactivate my listing.

I am too tired now to give a breakdown, as much I really would like to get into detail about each track, especially my favorites. As usual I’d love to make this into one big crossfaded mp3 for you guys that like that format, perhaps at a later time.

I am routinely obsessed with this 1982 Neue Deutsche Welle collaboration between otherwise unknown singer Silvia and underrated electronic wunderkind Tommi Stumpff, with Rainer Assmann aiding in production. From Stumpff’s own account, this project occured due to having unused studio time on their hands with Silvia doing a style overhaul from “punk” to “new wave” for the cover.

One of the songs I am posting from this LP is likely to be included in the mix I am working on, though I am sure most people don’t download the mixes and the tracks I post.

I find it amusing that the track “Sex Im Aquarium” reminds me of dancehall reggae, notably Mad Cobra’s “Flex (Time to Have Sex!)” Concurrently Tommi Stumpff’s “Crêve Petit Con” from his 1982 release Zu Spät Ihr Scheißer sounds like something out of Kingston ten years later. I am also including this French versed track by Stumpff for those of you reading via the feed .  I’ve tried to figure out why Podpress only includes one track in the feed, with no luck.

Naturally like every release I could ever want, this little known record is going for restrictively absurd amounts of money. One can dream, right?
